A tiny music studio that runs entirely on your device

Music Maker is a step sequencer: each row is an instrument and each of the sixteen columns is a 16th-note step in a one-bar loop. Switch on the steps you want and the pattern repeats. The drum rows — kick, snare, hi-hat, open hat and clap — trigger on every lit step, while the bass, lead and choir-pad rows play the note you choose for that row. Everything is synthesised live with the Web Audio API through Tone.js, so there are no samples to download and nothing is ever uploaded. Press Export WAV and your loop is rendered to an audio file right in the browser.

Mix, groove and stay in key

Every track has its own mute, solo and volume control, so you can balance the kit, isolate a part while you write, or drop the hats for a breakdown. The swing slider pushes the off-beats late for a human, less robotic feel — a little goes a long way on hi-hats. The key and scale lock is what keeps melodies musical: pick a root note and a scale (major, minor, Dorian, Mixolydian, pentatonic, blues or harmonic minor) and the note menus for the tonal rows only offer notes that are in key, so the bass, lead and pad always agree with each other.

Build sections, then a whole song

Four pattern slots — A, B, C and D — each hold an independent loop. Sketch a verse in A and a chorus in B, then switch between them live while the transport keeps running. When you are ready to commit, Randomize generates a fresh in-scale groove to start from, and the genre presets drop in ready-made patterns for house, hip-hop, techno, pop, lo-fi and funk. Save the whole project to your browser with a name, reload it any time, or copy a share link that encodes the entire project so a collaborator can open exactly what you hear.

From sketch to your DAW with Pro

The free tool is genuinely complete for sketching and sharing loops. Music Maker Pro is for finishing: export your pattern as a standard MIDI file — drums mapped to General MIDI percussion and each tonal part on its own track — so you can re-voice it with any instrument in your DAW. Song mode arranges the slots into a full arrangement you can play or bounce to a single WAV or MIDI, and stems export renders every track to its own WAV, zipped together for mixing. It is the difference between a quick idea and a session you can keep working on.

Frequently asked questions

Is anything uploaded to a server?
No. Music Maker synthesises every sound live in your browser with Web Audio and Tone.js. Your patterns never leave your device, there's no account, and WAV/MIDI files are rendered locally. The only network use is loading the audio library itself.
Can I export my beat?
Yes. Export WAV renders your loop to a downloadable file in your browser. Pro adds MIDI export (drums on a General MIDI percussion channel plus separate tracks for bass, lead and pad), song-arrangement WAV/MIDI, and per-track stems as a ZIP.
What is the key and scale lock for?
Pick a root note and a scale and the note menus for the bass, lead and choir-pad rows are limited to in-key notes, so melodies stay in tune. Randomize also picks in-scale notes.
How do the slots and song mode work?
Slots A–D each hold an independent 16-step pattern, so you can build a verse and a chorus and switch live. Pro Song mode arranges those slots into a sequence and plays or exports the whole arrangement as one WAV or MIDI file.
Does it have real singing voices?
No. The choir/vocal pad is a synthesised instrument that approximates an ooh/aah texture. True lyric singing isn't possible client-side, so the pad is an instrument, not a singer.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The grid scrolls horizontally on small screens and the controls are touch-friendly. Tap the grid to toggle steps, then press Play (mobile browsers need one tap to enable audio).
Note: Music Maker runs best on a desktop or laptop with a recent browser; very old devices may be slow. All sound is synthesised (no sample packs), so it is a sketchpad and groovebox rather than a full DAW. Projects and saved beats live only in this browser — clearing site data removes them, so export anything you want to keep.
